Quick Facts:
I am a dancer and choreographer from Uganda. My work stretches the idea of dance, expanding into further contemporary art practices a.o. drawings and sculptures. My work involves communities in that it addresses urgent social challenges, mainly dominant ideas around ability. I use my body to create my own dictionary of ability. I have developed a physical practice that encompasses different local and global traditions of dance and movement. I am a dancer within a society that systematically marginalises “disabled” people. In my role as a choreographer, I mobilise local communities to rethink and relabel the notion of “disability”. I am committed to decolonising dance as a language and facilitating access to the benefits of diversity and different understandings of ability.
Three relevant works from the last 5 years of artistic practice:
- KINGX & QWEENS is a powerful, boundary-pushing dance piece that takes the audience into new dimensions of physicality and movement. It asks: What is a perfect life, a perfect body, a perfect heritage?
- Time Machine, dance-theater solo, premiered in South Africa, November 2022
- Firefly, dance piece performed with lots of movements, voice and humour, inspired by Tebandeke’s story as he was growing up, premiered July 2021
