Quick Facts:
Nicolene Burger is a multi-media artist and Creativity Doula who combines painting, installation, and performance to explore memory, identity, vulnerability, and connection. With a BA in Fine Arts from Stellenbosch University and a practice-based master’s in Theatre and Performance at UCT, her work engages multiple senses—taste, smell, sound, and touch—to create immersive, transformative experiences that invite audiences to connect deeply with themselves and others.
Nicolene’s artistic journey spans numerous milestones. Her solo exhibition Painted Mantras at Stellenbosch University Gallery showcased her exploration of spirituality through vibrant oil-on-canvas works. She has participated in international residencies, including the Rhizome Artist Residency in South Korea, where she collaborated with local artists to interrogate race, voice, and identity. Her acclaimed performance series Take Flight, rooted in her activism during the #FeesMustFall movement, was featured at the Infecting the City Live Art Festival and adapted into a global "walkshop" format for the Walking Art and Relational Geographies conference in Spain.
As co-founder of House of Bliss, Nicolene curated multiple Bliss Soireés, an immersive event series in Cape Town fostering artistic collaboration and free expression. During the pandemic, she pivoted her practice to virtual platforms, creating the Zoom performance series Evoked? and offering creative coaching sessions to support artists. She continues to guide meditative art experiences and help individuals connect to their innate creativity or execute their creative plans from her studio in Fish Hoek.
Through her dynamic and evolving artistry, Nicolene is committed to fostering empathy, healing, and growth, reminding us of art’s boundless potential to transform and connect.
